Kumquats

I recently discovered kumquats.

They look so innocent and delicious, don't they? Like oranges. Cute, baby oranges. That you don't have to peel! How handy.

But I quickly discovered that I don't like kumquats. They taste like lemons, only with more... "kick." Fruit, my dears, should be sweet.

Add a ton of sugar and put it in a pie crust for maximum delicious.

What are your favorite fruits, and ways to eat them? And, if any of you have a way to make strawberry pie that isn't watery, do share. I've tried for three summers in a row with no success, and strawberry-picking season is coming up!

  1. it's not a pie, but don't be put off ....

Take a bunch of strawberries, half them, sprinkle a little sugar over the top, also vanilla (seeds if you can, or essence) chop stem ginger and sprinkle over, pour some of the syrup from the stem ginger jar over the top, too - pour a glug of Pimms over, and leave to marinate at room temp for however long you have. Then, grill on a high, high heat for like 2-3 minutes until they juuuuust start to soften and let go of their juice, then serve on a plate beside a little mound of crushed shortbread and a scoop of fine vanilla ice cream. And that, my friend, is my signature dessert.

    1. Classy and easy! It sounds delicious, and perfect, especially for summer. Perhaps with a Pimm's cup as well!

  2. That does sound yummy though I'd omit the ginger which I don't much like.

My fave: blueberries, with nectarines breathing hot on their neck. The problem with fruit pie (except apple) is that fruit cooks faster than pastry and releases a lot of water, as sillywrongbutvividright says, in the process. Solution: bake the pastry ("blind" for pie or tart shell, i. e. lined with foil and filled with weights like beans or rice to keep it from buckling ), then fill with cooked or raw (raspberries!) fruit just before serving so the pastry stays crisp.

  3. I love kumquats. I don't like to add sugar to fruit. So I'm strange, I guess.

  4. Oh my goodness I'm a total fruit addict and connoisseur. Honey Crisp apples, Pink Lady apples, Jazz apples, kiwi fruit, kiwi berries, grapes, mango, dragonfruit, star fruit, pineapple, peaches, white peaches, watermelon, cherries of all varieties, I love ALL teh fruits! Mostly fresh, not real big on adding sugar and baking them although baked apples and cinnamon make a great dessert.

    1. I love fruit, too! It just has to be sweet, not sour. So I don't like grapefruit or kumquats very much. :P What on earth are kiwi berries? On your list I've also never tried: dragonfruit, starfruit, jazz apples.

Re: Adding sugar - have you ever tried taking a strawberry, dipping it in sour cream, and then dipping it in brown sugar? It's unexpectedly divine. Of course, plain strawberries are perfectly delightful as well.

    2. http://www.hursts-berry.com/images/library/kiwiberry6oz.jpg Kiwi berries are like miniature bite sized kiwis. They are so neat! You don't have to peel them you just take the little stem nub off and eat. Starfruit is somewhat easy to find, especially in big markets, Jazz apples are often on sale and very available but the dragon fruit I've only gotten once or twice at a specialty market. Your strawberry idea sounds delightful!

  5. To do justice to the kumquat (my 11 yr old daughter: "what are those?" "kumquats" i reply, she: "WHAT? ha ha ha ha")...

anyway the flavor of the kumquat varies - speaking of Pimms Cups - in New Orleans the kumquats are much sweeter than the midwest for instance

    1. A perfectly natural reaction to the word kumquat. Seriously, that is an inherently hilarious name! And - next time I'm in New Orleans (which is to say, the very first time I get a chance to visit New Orleans!) I will absolutely have to try a kumquat!
