Portland Carnival

We went to the carnival on Monday. There was a Ferris wheel, deep fried food and hordes of screaming toddlers.

That thing in the corner is a funnel cake. If you haven't had one, I highly recommend it. It's a deep-fried vehicle for powdered sugar. You can't go wrong there.

I rode the carousel. People always think it's hilarious when I do that.

I say: Why should 4-year-olds have all the fun?

What are your plans this weekend?

  2. I had a funnel cake at a fair in Missouri once. My friend had one and turned green and was very sick. Wimp!
Thatfair also featured a wall of premium hams. I should resurrect my piece on that fair and repost it. Talk about Americana!

    1. Wall O' Ham! I love it. Americana, indeed. I love a good carnival or county fair.

  3. Deep frying... so wrong, yet so right. Here's a video

about deep fried artichokes--it's in Italian but easy to follow and I can testify the results are delicious. I made this once and it's not very difficult, though it leaves you with a pint or so of used olive oil and crispy bits to dispose of. But there's a really good SF restaurant that serves it as an appetizer, with shredded nepitella aka Lesser Calamint. Crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside, and you can eat every morsel because the preparation ruthlessly pares away the inedible parts.
